Chindogu
Chindogu is a Japanese word meaning something that sounds useful, but in practice isn't really. This illustration is from a book called 'Unuseless Japanese Inventions' first published in 1995. The author, Kenji Kawakami, and his friends made all manner of objects that, on the face of it, sound like they might be really useful - but on reflection are actually rather silly. All objects are beautifully made and illustrated. Among them is this...does this look familiar? Is the selfie stick Chindogu?! Or are people so narcissistic they no longer care!
