Thames and Severn Canal
Western Portal of Sapperton Tunnel. Sapperton tunnel is 3817 yards long - but is blocked by a roof fall. It is paralleled by a railway tunnel on the line from Swindon to Stroud and Gloucester, Brunel's original way to South Wales.
Though the last commercial load was carried over this canal in 1911, there is a long term plan to restore it - and work is steadily progressing. When it does open it will be a truly fantastic route through some of the loveliest country in England in the heart of the Cotswold Hills. Meanwhile it is possible to walk the route. Take a train to Kemble and walk to Stroud - I've done that a couple of times and it's a wonderful walk.
