Ghosts of the Wilts & Berks Canal
This canal closed in 1914, but in places its course is clearly visible - such as here in central Swindon. This original bridge carries a footpath under a road. The bridge must have been a rebuild (c.1900?) in engineering bricks. The upright iron reinforcing bar on the corner shows only modest evidence of wear from tow ropes, since for some time before closure traffic on the canal was minimal. On either side of the bridge you can very much see where the canal used to be.
