The Cromford and High Peak Railway
The Cromford and High Peak Railway was a very early long-distance railway opened in 1830 and linking the Cromford Canal south of Cromford with the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge. Thus linking the East Midlands with Manchester across the limestone upland of the Peak District that was unsuitable for canal construction. Flat sections of horse-worked line were separated by rope-worked inclines powered by stationary engines. Later locomotives took over from horses. The last section closed in 1967.
This is the Middleton Top beam engine that powered the Middleton incline.
