The Brink

I had the idea for this shot for months ahead of time and in my mind I thought it wouldn’t be that difficult to pull off.

Then I arrived at the scene. I hiked down to the Lower Falls viewing area and of course there was a throng of people taking in the views. I patiently waited my turn to set up my tripod and configure the settings for the proposed capture. 16mm just isn’t wide enough to pull off the magnitude of the surroundings from this location.

I’m not sure if I like this image or not to be honest. I used a 6 stop ND filter to cut out the harsh afternoon sunlight. In retrospect, maybe I should gave gone with a 10 stop but there were so many people that I felt pressured to just move on after staking the spot for over ten minutes or so. I was wedged into the corner railing with the falls on one side and the vast canyon to the left. Definitely one of my favorite spots at Yellowstone National Park.
