April’s Many Obsessions
(And believe me, I have many, MANY obsessions.)
Some time ago I posted pictures of my Bali Skimp Skamp and Vanity Fair briefs. I showed quite a few of them (And I have more now!) This post got more comments and faves than many of the pictures of me. Hmmm. In any case, the fact is that I have quite a few obsessions, some you can clearly see, some you might not know. For reasons that really do escape me, I thought I would post some pictures of things I obsess over.
These are many of my vintage stockings. I have been collecting them since, well, before they were vintage! I had a favorite “Albert’s” that I went to outside of Boston (though there were 2 in the city as well). There are very few of the Albert’s left and I seldom wear them. I hate “runs” and cannot wear stockings when they have runs. Like the person who covers their furniture with clear plastic, I have them but I cannot let myself enjoy them, except for the fact that I have them!
Every smaller box has at least three pairs in it. The boxes with little white hand-written labels have stockings that might not be original to that box. I have more seamless stockings than seamed, but I have quite a few of both. There are about 130 boxes here, each with 3 pairs of stockings, plus another 100 or so in cellophane packages, plus about 30 boxes of both Hanes and Alberts in a box in my garage, plus the stockings I have worn and lovingly cared for. BTW with seamless I am pretty open about mesh or flat knit- the stocking snobs don’t like the mesh- but they must have a reinforced heel and toe or I am not interested. And I like all colors, though “Cinnamon” shades are a favorites, as is white with the right outfit.
Where do I find them? eBay or Etsy of course, but before that I was always wandering in and out of vintage clothing or antique shops. Quite some time ago I got about 30 pairs in London for 12 pounds.
There was a place in NYC called “Cosmo” hosiery that stayed open for quite some time. I would call this amazing little French woman and tell her I was coming and she would have things for me. Sadly they are all gone, but then again I like pantyhose too…
