THE JOHN RYLANDS LIBRARY :: MANCHESTER :: UK

A fabulous neo-gothic building by Basil Champneys and now part of Manchester University. Rather unusual to see the distnctive red sandstone which is from, and can be otherwise seen in the the locale of, the Penrith area about a hundred miles north in Cumbria. Recently, and very cleverly, updated and extended, giving space to the side to show off more of the original building but with the modern visitor area and cafe introducing it to the adjacent modern buildings.

Sketched increasingly chilled by directed draughts from three sides! However, I've come to feel that sketching in some discomfort occasionally is a rather pleasing challenge. Given so many being done in awkward conditions, despite also so many done in cafes, pubs etc., I've come to feel that it's often a proper part of the task, even part of a historical tradition of such . . . .

First occasion out with the Manchester Urban Sketchers' Group.
