Luton Now And Then

EXPLORED 1.5.2025.

Luton 1/3

First visit to Luton for some years to see recent changes to the town centre. This includes a revamp of a cinema in George Street that has stood empty for a long time. Mural artist Sarah Hodgkins was commissioned to paint this in an Art Deco style depicting Luton’s past. Catching an interview with her on the local TV news I knew I had to go and see this for myself! Fabulous artwork that took her 16 days to complete and has really added colour and interest to the town centre…

Some other examples of the mural to follow but here I just like the contrast in fashions with the passers by. In the mural everyone wears a hat - Luton is famous for its hat industry - and also shown is a lovely Vauxhall car from a bygone era. Unfortunately the Vauxhall plant in Luton recently closed, putting an end to many years of car production in the town.
