Syria 2005-6

These pictures were taken in Syria during three visits there as part of an EU-funded project supporting the establishment of new university courses.

I think that many of these wonderful places may now have been destroyed by the terrible war.

Syria has been much maligned by the northern governments but I found it to be a beautiful country with charming people, lovely food and the cradle of the so-called civilisation of Europe and the Middle East. What kind of civilisation is that allows its history to be wiped out?
