Jean’s noodles hit the spot in Phuket
PHUKET: Mee Sapam Khun Yai Jean, or หมี่สะปำ คุณยายเจียร in Thai, has been a homely get-together point for Phuket residents and tourists to sample Hokkien noodles and chewy fish balls since 1946. Chinese woman Jean Pupa immigrated from the Hokkien area in China and settled in Sapam village in Phuket. She, alongside many other immigrants from China, decided to open restaurants to serve distinct Hokkien food to tin miners in Phuket Town and Kathu during the tin-mining heyday of the 1950s.
When The Phuket News visited the Koh Kaew branch, Sujit Kuenrom, the daughter of the late Mrs Pupa, was running the restaurant. “This is our 67th year running the restaurant, which is popular because of the quality of our dishes. What customers eat today is the exactly the same recipe that my mother made herself.”
She spoke fondly of her mother: “Khun Jean was a very friendly person and very well known as a good cook in our family. Many of my family members were fishermen during that time, so my mother always had a good selection and high quality seafood for her dishes.” ......
