--------
The Viking Press (New York), 1962, First edition - First printing, 311 pages.
This hardcover book is in very good condition. The binding is tight and straight. There is no
foxing. There are no bumps. The pages are clean and bright with no writing or marks and
are not torn, bent or folded. There is minor staining on the spine and front cover. There is a
very light browning, which is hardly noticeable, on the outside edge of the pages (seen when
book is closed). There are no inscriptions, stickers, stamps or plates. The first-state dust
jacket, which has the original price ($4.95) and the blurb by Jack Kerouac on the front flap, is
complete, but has chipping and creasing (see photos of dust jacket in this description and in
links below). This book has "Red Cross woman named Gwen-doe-lin" on page 86 and the
Red Cross woman is also mentioned on pages 9, 11, 35, 73, 122 and 250. Any reference to
the Red Cross woman had to be changed because of a lawsuit brought against Kesey and the
publisher (Viking) by a woman who claimed the character was based on her and written in a
disparaging manner. The third printing still had Red Cross woman on pages 9, 11, 73, 122
and 250. All printings after the third printing had "Red Cross woman" completely removed.
