Fake Moderne

This is a funny tale that went down a few years ago in Dan's shop, it's kind of long winded so get comfortable.

It actually started back in the early 70's. Dan had come across what he thought was an Explorer. It had been heavily modified with an extra pickup rout and at some point had been re-necked at the Gibson factory. Dan scooped the guitar up, did a quickie repair patching the extra holes with plaster of Paris and possibly even making a new pickguard to cover the repairs. He sold it in Ann Arbor a day or so later for $175.

 

This guitar turned out to be the elusive Gibson Moderne. It made it's way to George Gruhn and then was sold to a Japanese buyer. It has inspired many counterfeits over the years. Not having seen either guitar before, Dan didn't know what he had.....
