Whitney Biennial 2017 opens in New York City

New York, NY, 13th March, 2017: Fueled by anger and angst over recent political events and economics, the 2017 Whitney Biennial surveying the current state of American art opens to the public on March 17 and runs through June 11. Showcasing the work of 63 artists, this biennial is the first to be held in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s home in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan. More gallery space has been devoted to this exhibition than was ever before possible since the first Whitney Biennial, which was held in 1932. An installation by Raúl de Nievescovers the entire glass wall of one of the museum’s galleries. The installation’s 18 panels are made of paper, wood, glue, tape, beads and acetate sheets, mimicking stained glass. The windows reference peace, love, truth, justice, harmony and hope, which are beset by violence, decay and death. In front of the windows, de Nieves placed strange, grotesque figures partially made of beads. They show “UUU MEE” (the name of one of the sculptures) oppressed by religious and civic forces.
