Circa 1895 - "COOGEE BAY", Coogee, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (restored version)
IMAGE INFO
- Viewpoint is looking south-west from an elevated vantage point in Dunningham Reserve, located on the headland at the northern end of Coogee Beach.
- I have re-dated this image from circa 1890 to circa 1895, since:
(a) a cut stone seawall can just be seen skirting the beach (it was still a wooden picket fence in 1891!)
(b) electric tram system not visible - steam trams ran until 1902 (see later 1895 pic),
(c) there are no visible automobiles - only horse drawn.
(d) the people are clearly wearing late Victorian fashions &
(e) there are far fewer houses visible on the hillside that includes Beach, Arden & Carr Streets than in a later photo in this album which is dated to circa 1901.
