The Only Shay Geared Locomotive in Britain.

Shay No 618 was owned by Alfred Hickman Ltd, Bilston Steelworks, Staffordshire. Standard gauge.

Built Jan. 1900 by LIMA Locomotive Works, Ohio, USA.

Four wheels, diameter on tread, 2ft 2in. Three vertical cylinders, 8in bore by 12in stroke, Gear ratio 2.176 : 1. Wagon top boiler containing seventy-nine brass tubes 1¾in dia and 8ft long with a copper firebox 3ft 7in long by 2ft 7in wide and 3ft 2in deep. Working pressure 140lb per sq in. Tractive power 9,960lb. Factor of adhesion 5.63. The tank held 1040 gallons of water, and the bunker 2 tons of coal. In working order the engine weighed approximately 25 English tons
