Wakehurst Place, what has happened to the restaurant?
Some Flickrfriends might have noticed that we're frequent visitors to Wakehurst Place, the Kew in Sussex National Trust garden, when P. takes a rare day off work. It's a peaceful place for woodland walks, world trees, birds and views, and after a brisk circuit of the perimeter we sometimes enjoy lunch in the restaurant. Bad news. It's all changed. Gone are the locally made sausages and fresh locally grown vegetables, a substantial plate which P. enjoyed and which felt like reasonable value for money. Change of franchise, and in comes 'chick pea curry and naan bread', and 'pollock and couscous with red cabbage' - the sad-looking last two surprisingly small meals, left under the hot lights on the quiet day we visited. Now, at £9.50 each meal (excluding the coffee), in the self-service-with-no-smile restaurant, we felt more than a little disappointed. Naan bread? 3 tiny delicate triangles cut from the whole?! Half a cup of couscous? After a hearty walk? For a bit of a treat? Come on N.T.
