100 Strangers #23/100 - Walter

This is my twenty-third portrait for 100 Strangers.

Good day friends I would like to introduce you all to Walter or as he is known by his Native American name, Condogovee (I hope I've got that correct!).

After leaving Death Valley we stopped at the small town of Lone Pine to have a bite of lunch. We were invited to sit at an outside table with Walter who was on his lunch break. Walter has had a fascinating life. The only full blooded native American (Paiute / Shoshone) left in his family, Walter is a veteran of the US Marine Corps during which time he travelled the world. He has worked with horses all his life and has been part of the teams that bring injured climbers and walkers down from Mt Whitney (seen behind him in the distance in his portrait). He has spent a lot of his time recording old tribal songs for future generations and also works in the silver trade making and repairing traditional native jewellery.

I'm afraid this portrait is poor; the sunlight was very harsh and I over exposed the background and under exposed Walter!

Walter I hope you like your portrait despite the quality and thank you for the fascinating conversation; needless to say we are no longer strangers :-)

I intend to make this a 100 strangers in B&W with maybe the odd splash of colour!

This picture is #23 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page
