Per ardua ad astra

One of my father's RAF uniform buttons, shown with the heading of the notepaper of a letter he wrote home while training in 1942. It bears the RAF motto 'Per ardua ad astra' - 'through adversity to the stars'. The writing behind is from a notebook he kept while learning to maintain and repair radio equipment
