Giraffe

These giraffes are the last remaining in West Africa.

This subspecies (Giraffa camelopardalis peralta) used to thrive everywhere in West Africa, but because of hunting for their meat, this small population in Niger is the very last remaining.

In 1996 only 51 giraffes were left. But thanks to conservation programs the population has grown and there are now about 200 individuals, all of which are known.

Poaching is rare nowadays and the giraffes have lost their fear of humans. It is easy to get close to them by foot, with a guide.

The main problem the giraffes face now for their survival is deforestation.

Kouré region, Niger.
