Side-striped jackal

A rare sight! And when you do see them, it's always only for a few seconds as they are very shy.

There are two jackal species in the park : the side-striped jackal (Canis adustus, chacal à flancs rayés) and the common jackal (or golden jackal, Canis aureus, chacal doré, chacal commun).

This is a side-striped jackal. They have the widest distribution of all jackals in Africa, but they are also the rarest.

Parc national de la Pendjari, Benin.
