Berlin, Friedrichstraße 43-45, December 2012
The snow was melting on my last night in Berlin. I boarded the underground to the international bus station close from here. Checkpoint Charlie was about the only disappointment of my visit to the German capital. Nothing much remains from one of the most exciting border crossings of the 20th century, except for the little building you see on the left. The other buildings, the zig-zag structure for cars, etc. have all disappeared. Souvenir shops and McDonald's and Starbucks outlets that surround the place offer little consolation.
Friedrichstraße has become an average shopping street in Berlin-Mitte, with sufficient space for cars.
