Alpine Mural
I drove through Alpine, Texas in Far West Texas after leaving Big Bend National Park. It's a small town, big in the arts. There are a number of art galleries, murals, and an annual Art-walk in the city.
This beautiful mural was painted by Texas born and educated western artist, Stylle Read, who combines his love of history with art. He has painted works in many states of the US from California to Tennessee, with a large number all over the State of Texas. After being painted, his outdoor murals are covered by a sealer developed by NASA for UV ray blockage to prevent excessive fading of color.
Sul Ross is the name of the local university, Sul Ross State University. Dan Blocker who became famous as the character "Hoss Cartwright" in the long-running TV series, Bonanza, was a Sul Ross alumni. His beloved character is depicted on the lower left side.
Alpine had its beginnings with the building of the railroad in 1882 and the railroad is left center.
To the left of the Sul Ross banner is a map of Brewster County, home of Big Bend. Brewster County is the largest county by area in the state, over three times the size of the state of Delaware, and more than 500 square miles (1,300 km2) bigger than Connecticut.
Unfortunately I didn't know all this information at the time I was there. During my brief visit of an hour or so I was captivated by the artwork just in this one block. Little did I know that there are various murals around the town, painted in conjunction with the annual Art-walk. Alpine loves culture and the arts. (Incidentally, this entire region is influenced by the arts, particularly of the desert and mountains of the whole Big Bend area.)
I was not able to capture the entire width of the mural. Most of it is here, but a little is cut off on each end. I would love to revisit this entire area in November when the annual Art-walk is held in Alpine. Also in November the famous chili-cookoff is held in Terlingua, on the western edge of Big Bend National Park.
