Soc went 'walkabout' after dinner one evening in July and didn't return.
He blessed us with his irreplaceable presence for 15 years, refusing to accept his failing health and continuing to grasp the world with all four paws at every opportunity. Intelligent, talkative, curious to the point of recklessness, he used his own 9 lives plus many more over the years.
I trust that he glimpsed the Gates of Feline Heaven glinting in the twilight as he chased rabbits through the fields and, ever the adventurer, found their beauty irresistible.
A most uniquely outstanding friend and companion, perhaps Soc knew that saying 'Goodbye' would be impossible, so he departed as he had lived, impeccably.
He is sorely missed, but the memories of his graceful charm (and his madcap escapades) will be with us forever :-)
There are more pics of Soc and his chums in the Big Beasties set.
Soc has continued his adventuring - he's now Exploring in flickrLand :-))
See the Explore images together in Explore Set.
Biography
Soc came to stay as a 7-week-old rescue kitten in 1993. A possible encounter with an old tin can, as a youngster, left him with a forked tongue, but the indignity of being syringe-fed 35 times a day until he could eat again created an unfathomably strong bond between us.
He would come along with our dog on hikes through the countryside, chatting endlessly as we walked. He was always an adventurer and an earnest story-teller - eager to share details of his trips to the river, hunting the local ducks, on his return.
Surgery for a parathyroid tumour in 2005 failed to curtail his joie-de-vivre, though the vet could do no more for Soc's heart, as he became more frail over the past year. He began to prefer a chair in the sun to forays through the garden fence into the fields. I began to dread a long and painful goodbye, but it was not to be.
The July evening Soc left was sunny and warm, the corn was high, easy for him to forget his 15 years and imagine himself a dashingly handsome young cat again... perfect for his favorite pastime of rabbit-chasing from days gone by...
He didn't come home. All searches proved fruitless.
I'm so glad that he didn't have to suffer a long, painful illness, but I still miss him so much.
