Finnish galeas Väinö ab. 1930
This is my favorite Finnish galeas photo - The two-masted galeas Väinö being towed to port by its dinghy (ab.) 1930. The 21.15 m x 6.47 m Väinö was built by Axel A. Jansson in Nagu (Nauvo) in 1906. Arthur Wikström from Uusikaupunki (Nystad) was her owner in 1928 - 1953. The ship appears to have been a family business, here shown with Mrs Wikström at the helm. The couple's two daughters are also on board. The only hired crew member is the man rowing and towing. Väinö is loaded with what looks like wooden boxes, but I have no idea what they contain. The location is not known. After 1935 the crew member did not have to row anymore, as the ship that year got its first (15 hp) motor. In 1953 a new 39 hp motor was installed. 1953 was also the last year Väinö was registered on the merchant ship list. I have not found any information about what happened, but there is a page showing the location of the shipwreck Väinö in Uusikaupunki. Any additional information is welcome.
My restoration and digital hand colorization of the original image in the Uusikaupunki museum archive (finna.fi).
