Schooner Colonia (1896)

This is Commodore Ashley Postley´s schooner Colonia sailing in a Larchmont regatta 1896. Colonia was designed and built in 1893 as a sloop by Herreshoff to be a candidate in the 1893 America's Cup. After losing against Vigilant - another Herreshoff design - Colonia was in 1895 bought by Postley, who had her converted into a schooner under the supervision of Archibald Cary Smith.

As a schooner Colonia went on to have a long and successful racing career, winning two Goelet Cups and two Astor Cups. In 1901 - 1902 she was - renamed as Corona - Commodore Lewis Cass Ledyard´s flagship of the New York Yacht Club.

Later the yacht had several other owners until she was wrecked by a flood in the Bahamas in 1926.
