Refanut - The favourite yacht of Olin Stephens
Refanut - The boat Olin Stephens said was his best design
The Sparkman & Stephens (Olin Stephens) designed ocean cruiser Refanut was built in 1955 by Neglingevarvet (close to Stockholm) for Swedish banker and industrialist Jacob Wallenberg (1892-1980). She has not left the family. The current owner is Fredrik Wallenberg.
My restoration and colorization of Gustav Grahm´s 1963 photo in the Swedish Maritime Museum archive (Digital Museum). If you look closely, you can see Jacob Wallenberg at the helm. The photo was probably shot during the Gotland Runt race.
In an article published in the 1990s Olin Stephens was asked which construction he considered his best. He replied, "Refanut is the one and only".
"From her completion in 1955 until 1975 she was sailed and raced by Jacob Wallenberg in and around the Baltic. The main racing event each year was Gotland Runt (the Round Gotland Race). In between she was cruised extensively with Jacob and Refanut making frequent visits to Finland, Denmark and Norway.
Peder Wallenberg took over Refanut from his father in the mid 70's. After a few successful entries in Gotland Runt he took Refanut first to the Mediterranean and then across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. During the 80's and 90's she alternated between the Baltic and the Med with a few race appearances here and there."
Fredik Wallenberg has continued the family tradition of racing. Refanut is still a regular in the Gotland Runt offshore race. This year she also took part in the Fastnet Race.
The current ORC certificate lists Refanut at:
sail area ................ 175 sq.m. (Main and jib)
LOA .... 19.17m
LWL .... 12.69m
B ........ 3.91
D ........ 2.92m
Disp ... 29.44 ton
