Fife 15mR yacht Beduin (ab. 1914)
When Norwegian engineer and industrialist Sam Eyde wanted to have a new yacht, only the best was good enough. In 1913/1914 he bought the 15mR yacht Sophie-Elisabeth - designed and built by William Fife III for L. Biermann in 1910 - and rechristened it Beduin. In Anders B. Wilse´s photo - here shown digitally hand painted by me - Eyde is sailing in Tromsøsund (Tromsø sound), probably in the early 1910s. The original image is in the Maritime Museum of Norway archive (Digital Museum).
The IYRU Fifteen Metre class yachts are constructed to the First International rule of 1907. A total of twenty 15mR yachts - eight of them designed by Fyfe - were built between 1907 and 1917. The four that have survived are still actively raced. Beduin, later renamed Magda X, has unfortunately not survived.
"Metre" does not refer to the length of the boat, but to her rating; the length overall of 15mR boats measuring almost 30 metres (98 ft) (Wikipedia)
"Samuel "Sam" Eyde (29 October 1866 – 21 June 1940) was a Norwegian engineer and industrialist. He was the founder of both Norsk Hydro and Elkem." --
"He was a member of the Norwegian Parliament in the period 1918-1920. In 1920, Eyde was appointed as Norwegian Minister to the United States" (Wikipedia)
