Portrait of naval constructor George H. Rock

Portrait of commander (later rear admiral) George Henry Rock (1869 - 1946), who later became chief constructor of the United States Navy. My colorization of an image in the Library of Congress archive. The photo is not dated, but my estimate is ab. 1920.

George Rock graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1889. During World War 1 he served as Construction Officer of the Navy Yard, New York. For his "exceptionally meritorious service" he was awarded the Navy Cross. In 1929 - 1932 Rock was Chief of the U.S. Navy Bureau of Construction and Repair. After his retirement Rock served among other things as head of the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. In 1933 he was elected president of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine engineers.
