Biddulph Grange Garden: window to the past
Autumn colour frames a transition to the sphinx-flanked entrance to "Egypt," in Biddulph Grange Garden (Staffordshire, west-central England), on an overcast morning in mid-October. This Victorian-period garden, now in the care of the National Trust, includes sections representing different parts of the world and periods in time, often separated by tunnels, grottoes, and other character-filled architectural features. The doorway in Egypt imitates the opening of an ancient Egyptian mastaba tomb. Just behind the hedge in the foreground, the bases and paws of other stone sphinxes can be seen.
