Llanberis: lakeside path

Green space and path along the southwestern shore of Llyn Padarn in the village of Llanberis, in Snowdonia (Gwynedd, in northwestern Wales), on a partly cloudy late afternoon in mid-October 2024.

Beyond this glacial lake, to its southeast, are mountains including part of the Snowdon Massif, in the background, and, just to the left of the view, Dolbadarn Castle, the 13th-century Welsh castle built by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth – Llywelyn the Great, Prince of North Wales; an upper lake (Llyn Peris); and Nant Peris, the valley leading up to the Llanberis Pass – in Welsh, Bwlch Llanberis. The area is within the Eryri National Park / Snowdonia National Park / Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri; Llyn Padarn itself is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is popular with boaters.

The imposing 20-foot-high steel sculpture – named Llafn y Cewri, Welsh for Blade of the Giants – was placed by the lake in 2017. Modelled on medieval swords of the Princes of Gwynedd, it echoes the legendary Arthurian “sword in the stone,” Excalibur. Next to it, people are enjoying the view from a bench.
