Dambach-la-Ville: vigneron cave entrance
Entrance to the courtyard of the house and tasting cave of an Alsatian vintner -- vigneron -- in the commune of Dambach-la-Ville (in the département of Bas-Rhin, Alsace, in northeastern France), on a partly cloudy afternoon in mid-October 2006.
Dambach-la-Ville, whose name goes back to the Gallo-Roman Tambacum (according to the official commune website, consulted 8 December 2015), is located on foothills of the Vosges Mountains and is on the Alsatian Route des Vins (Wine Route or Road). It is known for the quality of its wines, produced from vineyards in the vicinity and sold by vignerons in the town as well as elsewhere. The most common Alsatian grape varietals are represented here: Riesling, pinot blanc, pinot gris, and Gewürztraminer, all producing white wines of differing character that reflect the complex terroirs of the area. (Some pinot-noir-based reds are also made.)
