Achill Island: Ashleam Bay, autumn

View northwards along the southwestern shore of Achill Island (off the west coast of Ireland, in County Mayo), from above Ashleam Bay, on a partly cloudy morning in mid-September.

We stopped at this spot while going along the route that has been dubbed the "Atlantic Drive" -- which goes around the southern and southwestern shore of Achill -- in a section that is among the most dramatic parts of this drive, above cliffs that drop straight down into the ocean.

In Irish, the island's name is Oileán Acla ("Island of Achill") or simply Acaill, while the bay's name is Béal na hAisléime, also known as Portnahally (Port na hAille in Irish). [Names from Placenames Database of Ireland, 4 March 2014] (I have also seen indirect evidence, based on another place with the same name, that "Portnahally" may be used to refer specifically to the smaller cove, towards the right of this picture, within the larger bay, as well as its beach.)
