Week Sixteen

On Thursday night we finally finished our taxes. I hatched a plan: get the kids down, head to the main post office downtown to mail the taxes, and then swing by the waterfront to get a photo for the “bench” theme this week.

While I was packing gear, my older son Sam asked me for about the 10th time whether he could stay up late and “count stars.” As the days are lengthening and bedtimes are unchanged, the previous nine answers have been “another day.” Since I was going out anyway, and it was clear night (a rarity this time of year in Oregon) I told him he could come with me to the waterfront and we could count some stars there.

Well, these days my younger son Jim wants to do everything Sam does. In fact, very little happens that is not done as a family unit. Next thing I know all four of us are in the car.

In the end, we all had a lot of fun. Taxes got mailed. Stars were counted. Pictures were taken. I felt a little guilty about keeping the younger set out well past bedtime, but by the time we got home we had two sleepers, both much the happier for our adventure.

Finally, there is no question that this type of shot is at least partially inspired by Dustin Diaz. If you have somehow managed to not see his work, check it out here. It's awesome.

Honest critiques always welcome.
