Ex-120th FG (Air Defense) Northrop F-89J Scorpion 53-2547

*Converted to F-89J.

*7/19/1957: During a series of nuclear tests known as Operation PLUM BOB, this jet fired an MB-1 Genie rocket over the Yucca Flats Nuclear Test Site, and the 1.5 kT warhead was detonated at an altitude of 15,000 feet by a signal from the ground. This shot, named JOHN, made the Scorpion the first interceptor in history to launch a nuclear weapon.
