Raffee's Carpets
Original cut-away drawing by William Krisel
Architect: William Krisel (1959)
Location: 6331 University Ave, College Area, San Diego, CA
Archive of William Krisel, Getty Research Institute
Krisel designed a circular building with an ingenious pulley and lift system that could be centrally controlled remotely from the elevated command center. This enabled Raffee to efficiently move carpet roles around the showroom and load and unload them directly from the loading docks on the right. The building still exists today, but it's been modified a bit. It's now a gift store and home improvement center. The pulley system and rails can still be seen but are no longer in use.
