Billinghurst was a newspaper editor in Ashton, SD from 1880 to 1881. He and family moved to Pierre where he founded the State Publishing Company in 1883. Billinghurst was a brother-in-law of John E. Hipple, also a newspaper publisher. Billinghurst built a substantial house at 219 S. Tyler, later known as the King house. In 1909, Billinghurst sold the State Publishing business to Thomas Roberts, Sr. Billinghurst also published the Pierre Daily Dakotan, which closed in 1945.
Billinghurst suffered some financial reverses later in his life. For some years he sold insurance.
