19.9.2014: smoky skies from the King Fire
Another inevitable consequence of the drought in the western US are the wildfires burning in the foothills. Even down here in the Sacramento Valley we're getting the smoke drifting in. It does look quite beautiful, and the smell of wood smoke is quite alluring and reminds me of standing out the back at my house in Gloucester, but you have to remind yourself that this is a disaster.
Since I took this photo we have had a little bit of rain and the temperatures have, for the time being, cooled down a bit, which has allowed the firefighters to make considerable progress tackling the King Fire, but you have to wonder how much more of this is going to happen in the future if this drought carries on.
