Dark Cavern

A flight of narrow stone-paved stairs beside the main altar of the basilica leads you to this cavern, the Grotto of the Nativity that is also under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Church. The Altar of the Nativity (facing us) enshrines the site where Jesus is believed to have been born. This altar features some Armenian influences.

This basement is dark and run-down I tell you. However, these pilgrims didn't mind an iota. Everyone of them eagerly waited for their turn to touch the silver star on the floor that symbolises the location where the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus. The staircase is where the person in a white T-shirt was emerging from.
