Explosives Store, Tillyfourie

As dangerous as they were it was not the stores which posed problems for quarrymen. Firing at the quarry face was so much more dangerous. Apart from the ever-present threat from falling rock men who bored and then charged holes faced the danger of being caught in explosion as happened to one Andrew Stuart at Tillyfourie in July 1904. He had bored and charged 4 holes, fired them electrically and satisfied that all was well returned to prepare another firing when a delayed explosion took place killing the poor man. At the Fatal Accident Inquiry evidence given indicated that iron had been used to clear the hole for the second blast which, it was assumed, had produced a spark.
