Homage to Conan the Barbarian

A smattering of what I consider to be classic artwork and titles from the Conan genre. The Savage Sword of Conan was always my favorite print version of Conan. The stories were more grim and adult oriented than the color comics, but I enjoyed those as well.

So why did this geeky teenage boy latch onto Conan the Barbarian as a hero back in 1986? Well, for one thing Conan was NOT a caveman with a club. He was the mightiest of mortal men, but he didn't survive simply because he was too stupid to die. He was SMART. He was an expert swordsman. He was honorable to a fault and a gallant protector of women. He was fearless in face of death and inspired hope in the worst odds. More or less, he was a male figure I could only hope to be. The films are well-done in their own right, but they do not capture the characterization I describe here the way that Conan's creator Robert E Howard and subsequent author's writing in the same manner portray the Cimmerian hero.

Conan was the noble savage. He defeats his adversaries as much by his brains as his brawn.
