Unsettling Image
Kind of a silly title, but it does come close to encapsulating my reaction to this picture.
The back story is, for a long time I have wondered about the picture quality of the Canon 5D camera. A few photographers whose work I like use the 5D and their pictures are so luscious that I wondered (oh fool) if the camera had anything to do with it.
I started my DSLR journey years ago with a Canon XT, but when it started to fail, I switched to Nikon. I just really like how they handle. And that the much used on/off switch is right where it should be, next to the shutter button.
Anyhow, a week ago I bought a heavily used 5D to try out. The price was pretty good and I figured that if I didn't see any good results from the camera, I could just resell it.
The display is horrible, the controls are a nightmare. I don't enjoy using the thing.
But it's an experiment, right?
So today I took both my D7000 and the 5D out to try out on a promising sunset at Mugu Rock.
5D, 17-40mm f/4 lens.
D7000, 10-24mm f/whatever lens.
It was a blast, the tide was low, so I got out close to the surf.
I did not get wet, but it is amazingly hard to figure out how close waves are getting when looking through a viewfinder with a wide angle lens attached :-)
Spray was an issue, several of the most promising shots from the Nikon were spoiled by salt water on the lens.
But the unsettling conclusion was that the 5D image was clearly the best image of the session.
This one picture does nothing to settle the Nikon/Canon contest in my mind. But it does make me wonder.
A six year old camera vs a brand new model.
Wow.
Cheers.
