Le rouissage est une opération naturelle qui permet de faciliter la séparation des fibres de lin. A maturité, les agriculteurs arrachent le lin pour garder toutes les fibres contenues de la tête au pied de la plante et le couchent en bandes sur le sol. C’est ce que l’on appelle des andains dans lesquels les tiges doivent être bien alignées et pas trop tassées pour éviter les moisissures.
The retting is a natural operation that facilitates the separation of the flax fibres. When the flax is ripe, the farmers pull it out to keep all the fibres from the head to the foot of the plant and lay it down in strips on the ground. This is called swathing, in which the stalks must be well aligned and not too tightly packed to avoid mould.
