Essential Smell. Bactrocera dorsalis, Rod-horn Fruitfly, on Araceae sp., Green and White Anthurium (?), Taman Tasik Perdana, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

There's a little path along a small muddy waterway where I like to spot insects and tiny weeds in the Taman Tasik Perdana of Kuala Lumpur. I've taken many photos there in the course of the years, and it's always one of the first places I drop by on my visits. It's a shady place and in the patches of sunlight midmorning there are hundreds of little golden flecks making their way to the spadices of Araceae sp.; I think most people call them Green and White Anthurium (but as the 'sp.' indicates I'm sceptical).

Whatever the case, a 'ripe' spadix of this 'Boy-Flower' - called such for obvious reason - wafts methyl eugenol into the air. Our pretty golden Fruitfly is delirious for a taste of that Essential Oil. Especially a spadix warmed by a ray of Sunlight can attract whole tribes of Bactrocera. Here's one licking away to its heart's delight - if we might wax anthropomorphic!
