Tonight, Dear Friends, I'll be skimming under the stars in a KLM 777 on my way home. But today I was able still to amble about in the Taman Tasik Perdana, those wonderful Lake Gardens of Kuala Lumpur not far from Stesen Sentral. Lawns and hills and ponds all planted with a great variety of flowers and trees; a veritable spot for repose before a long flight.
Here's a Skimmer, one of the Libellulidae. It's endemic to peninsular Malaysia and to much of Southeast Asia. How's Coppertone Velvetwing in English for what Johan Christian Fabricius (1745-1808) called Neurothemis fluctuans? The 'fluctuans' doesn't mean 'flitting'; although that would have been fitting for this very flitting dragonfly. 'Fluctuans' is for the fluctuating colors between brownish rustcolored and red-brick colored of our Flitter's body.
When these Skimmers - usually shortly - stop from their flitting, Velvetwings in rest droop their wings. I hope my plane tonight doesn't...
