To Attention! Tulipa praestans 'Fusilier', Outstanding Tulip, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

In 1826 Carl Anton von Meyer (1795-1855) was part of a Russian expedition of discovery and natural history to what was later called 'The Roof of the World' which includes the Pamir-Altai mountain ranges. Born in Vitebsk, now Belarus, he studied botany in Tartu, Estonia, and went on to become the guiding force of the botanical garden of St Petersburg, Russia. During that expedition (Reise durch das Altai-Gebirge und die soongorische Kirgisen-Steppe auf Kosten der Kaiserlichen Universität Dorpat unternommen im Jahre 1826) led by his botanical master Carl Friedrich von Ledebour (1786-1851), he collected this Outsanding Tulip in the southern Pamir-Altai of Tajikistan. The flower went by a variety of names until in 1903 it was designated a new species with the name Tulipa praestans. The Tulip-growing firm of Tubergen in The Netherlands developed this wonderful cultivar named 'Fusilier', a Tulip truly standing to attention, here in one of the Spring tubs put out last week van our Hortus.
