Prettily Spotted. Begonia maculata, Raddi's Begonia, Oude Hortus, Utrecht, The Netherlands
In 1817 Giuseppe Raddi (1770-1829) enlisted as one of the scientists of the Österreichische Brasilien-Expedition (1817-1835) (see my earlier www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/5145492003/in/photolis...). He explored the Orinoco and Amazon basins and then soon returned to Europe. But Raddi was also in Rio de Janeiro. He collected on the famous, now iconic Il Corcovado where he found this new spotted Begonia which he described in 1820. After his return to Europe he in 1828 traveled with another expedition this time to Egypt. He fell ill and died on the isle of Rhodes.
I saw this lonesome Begonia unlabeled in a hothouse in the Oude Hortus.
