Delightful Yellow. Episyrphus balteatus, Marmalade Hoverfly, on Yellow Horned Poppy, Glaucium flavum, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Even on a dull day, the yellow of our Horned Poppy stands out. And especially delightful was this foraging Hoverfly, Episyrphus balteatus. Our Hoverfly is a very boon to gardeners: its larvae are voracious hunters of aphids, that eternal flower pest! But adults like this one thrive on pollen and nectar. They really lick the stuff up!
