Spring in the Garden. Bergenia, Pigsqueak, at Museum De Buitenplaats with the Village Church, Eelde, The Netherlands
The other day in Groningen I went down to the village of Eelde to look at the private Museum De Buitenplaats before it's amalgamated with the Drents Museum at Assen, capital of the province of Drenthe. The pretty gardens are still quite wintry but for this delightfully pink Bergenia. The pink reminds me of cute hogsears and thus also of one of the common names of our plant; the foliage does indeed squeak if you rub it together.
The inset shows on the left a sculpture by Alphons Willem Bernhard Johannes (=Fons) Bemelmans (1938-). It's his Orpheus (note the flute). On the right a wall of the ultramodern museum and in back is the medieval Dorpskerk (= village church), once dedicated to the Virgin.
The day was glum and rainy but all of this brought some light to my eyes!
