This startling Impatiens was first described by Ernst Friedrich Gilg (1867-1933) in 1909. He refers to the colorful travel journals of the intrepid German naturalist and explorer Georg August Schweinfurth 1836-1925) who traveled widely in cenral Africa. Schweinfurth wrote extensively on the Azande people of e.g. the Central African Republic, who were sometimes pejoratively called 'Niam Niam'. That name suggests cannibalism and is not used anymore, except for this not yet renamed Impatiens.
