Late on Blue. Dasysyrphus tricinctus, Triple-Banded Eye-Lashed Hoverfly, on Chicory, Cichorium intybus, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Olymp's eyesight isn't quite sharp enough to show you clearly the hairy-fringed eyes of our Hoverfly. But with a magnifying glass in the field they're pretty to behold. It's a bit late in the year for Tricinctus and, in fact, it's not all too common here. But the attraction of the pollen on the Blue if this Chicory is apparently strong.
